Most schools have embraced technology in education. Schools have started providing at least proving one computer for every five students. The annual budget spent on digital content is over $3 billion per year. The massive effort from both the federal government and schools to make sure that there are free online learning resources available to even the most remote schools. To keep up with the changing environment education managers and administrators must know what to do to ensure that personalized learning is achieved by students. The main notion is that digital platforms, software offer the once unimaginable selection of options for tailored education to each student’s abilities, interest, motivations, optimal pace learning, and personal preferences.
The four pillars of personalized learning
Various organizations have come together in a bid to harmonize digital education and have created a meaning of “personalized learning” that is based on four pillars:
Each learner should have a “learner profile” that shows the student’s abilities, preferences, weaknesses, and goals;
Each student should pursue a personalized learning path that encourages the learner to set and manage his or her academic goals;
Students should focus on their ability to demonstrate mastery of topics, rather than seat time; and,
Student leading environments should be flexible and structured in ways that support their individual goals.
How does technology in education support personalized learning?
In schools, students are given school-owned digital devices or allowed to come with their own devices from home. The aim to allow for “24-7” learning at the time and location of a student. Learning management systems such as Google Classroom, student information systems, and other education applications can also be utilized to streamline collaboration between teachers and students and track student progress.
Notwithstanding the huge investment that many schools are making, the evidence that digital learning habit can improve students’ outcomes or narrow achievement gaps at scale is still not defined clearly. However, the role of technology in education cannot be underestimated. If correctly implemented, digital learning platforms will unimaginably improve individual student’s abilities and encourage them to set and manage their own academic goals by first accessing their weaknesses and preferences.
